Japanese: 磯遊び - いそあそび

It is a custom to go to the sea or mountains to play on March 3rd, and is an evolution of events that originally involved sending off Hina dolls or going to the waterside for purification ceremonies. In some places, playing house in front of the Hinadan stage is called Isoasobi. In the coastal areas on the western side of Kyushu, people go to the beach on Hinamatsuri and spend the day playing, and in Oshima County, Yamaguchi Prefecture, people also play on the beach on the same day. There is also a custom called Isomatsuri, where young girls eat kusamochi (rice cakes made from grass) on the beach. In the Okinawa region, there is a custom called Marchasobi or Hamaoroshi, where women go to the beach carrying tiered boxes of food and drink and enjoy eating and drinking. All of these are said to be remnants of the "harae" and "misogi" rituals. The same goes for clam digging on March 3rd.

３月３日に海や山に遊びに出る風習で，もと雛(ひな)を送ったり祓(はらえ)に水辺に出たりした行事の変化である。雛壇の前でするままごとを磯遊びというところもある。九州西側の沿海地方では雛祭の日に海岸に出て一日遊び暮らし，山口県大島郡などでも同じ日に磯遊びをする。磯祭と称して乙女(おとめ)たちが浜で草餅(くさもち)を食べる風習もある。沖縄地方でも三月遊びとか，浜降りといって女性たちが重詰めを持って海浜に行き，飲食を楽しむ。これらも，みんな〈はらえ〉や〈みそぎ〉のなごりである，という。３月３日の潮干狩も同じである。
