This mineral is a fibrous cluster of needle-shaped crystals of riebeckite, a type of alkali amphibole, replaced by quartz (sometimes called crocidolite). The iron is oxidized, giving it a yellowish-brown color. Its fibrous structure causes the iridescence to change, making it look like a tiger's eye, hence the name. When some of the riebeckite remains and takes on a deep blue color, it is also known as hawk's eye. It is mainly found in metamorphosed stratified iron deposits in South Africa and Australia, and is used as an ornamental stone.
