The name of a place in Gar County, southwest of the Ali region of the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. Formerly known as Gartok (Ka Da Ke). To the north lies the Gangdise Mountains, to the south the Himalayas, and the Gar River, an upper stream of the Indus River, flows northeast. The New Tibet Expressway (Kargilku-Lhatse) runs through the area towards Luttu and Shigatse. Livestock farming, mainly sheep and yaks, has developed here, and naked oats are cultivated in the river valley. During the Qing Dynasty, it developed as the largest town in the Ali region, and was opened as a market along with Tsemo and Gyangtse by the 1904 British-Tibet Treaty (Lhasa Treaty), and trade with India and Britain was conducted via Kashmir for wool, green tea, and other products.
