An insect of the order Odonata, family Lithoptera. With a body length of about 15 mm and a hind wing length of about 13 mm, it is one of the smallest dragonflies in the world in the suborder Anisoptera. Males turn red when mature, while females have yellow and brown markings. The bases of both wings are orange-red. They are found scattered throughout the Japanese archipelago from Aomori to Kagoshima, but their numbers have decreased significantly due to the destruction of the shallow sphagnum moss bogs where the larvae grow. They can be seen in May and June on the plains and in July and August in the mountains. Furthermore, this species has been recorded to be distributed widely from various parts of Southeast Asia, including mainland China, and even as far as the island of New Guinea. In general, these southern species tend to be small and have degenerated black spots.

昆虫綱トンボ目トンボ科の昆虫。体長約15ミリメートル、後翅(こうし)長約13ミリメートルで、不均翅亜目のトンボとしては世界最小のものに入る。雄は成熟によって全体紅色となるが、雌は黄色と褐色の斑紋(はんもん)を示す。ともにはねの基半部は橙赤(とうせき)色、日本列島では青森県から鹿児島県まで全土に点々と分布するが、幼虫の育つ、浸出水による浅いミズゴケ湿原が破壊されることによって著しく減少した。平地では5～6月、山地では7～8月にみられる。さらに本種の分布は、中国大陸を含み、東南アジア各地から広く記録され、ニューギニア島に至る。一般にこれら南方産のものは小形で黒斑が退化する傾向がみられる。
