Sanekazura - Sanekazura

An evergreen wisteria (vine) of the family Scoliaceae (APG classification: Scoliaceae). The scientific name Kadsura is derived from the Japanese word kazura. The vine reaches a diameter of 2 cm. The leaves are alternate, elliptical, slightly thick, soft, and glossy, and the undersides tend to be purple. There are sparse sawtooth. In summer, pale yellow-white flowers measuring 1 to 2 cm in diameter appear in the leaf axils. The flowers are dioecious, with many pistils and stamens. The fruit is a beautiful aggregate with many spherical red berries on a fleshy receptacle. The contrast between the dark green leaves and the red fruit is popular, and it is planted in gardens and used as a hedge. It is commonly found in mountains and fields, and is distributed from Honshu to Okinawa, Jeju Island in Korea, the warm-tropics of southern mainland China, and Taiwan. It is an ancient plant that is also mentioned in the "Manyoshu". The bark contains a large amount of mucilage that is extracted with hot water and used as a hair styling product, hence the alternative name of Binankazura (beautiful man's kudzu). The dried fruit is used as a traditional Chinese medicine for nutrition and invigoration and as a cough suppressant, and is called Minamigomishi (Southern Gomishi), but Minamigomishi is actually a different species of the same genus, K. longipedunculata Finet et Gagnep., which is native to China.

マツブサ科（APG分類：マツブサ科）の常緑藤本(とうほん)（つる植物）。学名のKadsuraは日本語の葛(かずら)をとったものである。つるは径2センチメートルに達する。葉は互生し、楕円(だえん)形ですこし厚くて柔らかくつやがあり、裏面は紫色を帯びやすい。まばらに鋸歯(きょし)がある。夏、葉腋(ようえき)に径1～2センチメートルの淡黄白色の花をつける。雌雄異花でそれぞれ雌しべ、雄しべが多数ある。果実は集合果で、肉質の果托(かたく)に球形の赤い液果が多数つき、全体として球形で美しい。濃緑色の葉と赤い実との対照が好まれ、庭園に植えたり生け垣にしたりする。山野に普通にみられ、本州から沖縄、および韓国の済州島、中国大陸南部の暖帯、台湾に分布する。『万葉集』にも詠まれ、古くからある植物である。樹皮に多量の粘液物質を含み、それを湯で抽出して整髪料に用いたのでビナンカズラ（美男葛）の別名がある。果実を干して滋養強壮や鎮咳(ちんがい)の漢方薬とし、南五味子(みなみごみし)と称しているが、南五味子をとるのは本来は同属の植物で、中国産の別種K. longipedunculata Finet et Gagnep.である。
