〘Noun〙① A title given to court ladies based on the titles of the 54 chapters of "The Tale of Genji." For example, Sawarabi no Naijo and Sakaki no Myobu. Later, this custom spread to the ladies-in-waiting of feudal lords and noble families. *Zappai, Yanagi Taru-101 (1828) "A customer gives a purple-capped geisha name."② A name given to prostitutes and courtesans in addition to their real name. At first it was based on the name of a chapter in "The Tale of Genji," but later it came to be used for names unrelated to the chapter titles, such as Takao and Chihaya. It is also used as a name for women who work in restaurants such as bars and clubs. ※Sakehon・Kyoeki Yukiori Sasa (1803) 4 "Where in the world are people's professions ? Some have stage names, and some have real names." ※Takekurabe (1895-96)〈Higuchi Ichiyo〉 1 "Yesterday at the riverside store, the stage name of a certain Murasaki stuck in my mind."
