A political movement centered on the working class that developed in 19th century Britain. Workers and some merchants and industrialists who were dissatisfied with the electoral reform of 1832 united around Owen, Lovett, Atwood and others. In 1837, they created the People's Charter (the origin of the name Chartist), which focused on the demand for universal suffrage, and petitioned Parliament. The movement developed through signatures and mass rallies, but conflict arose over the movement's policies between moderate moralists and a violent faction led by O'Connor, and after the Great Petition Movement of 1848, the movement declined due to government repression and internal divisions. → Related topics O'Connor | Industrial Revolution | Universal Suffrage Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
