A political movement centered on the working class that developed in 19th century Britain. Workers and some merchants and industrialists who were dissatisfied with the electoral reform of 1832 united around Owen, Lovett, Atwood and others. In 1837, they created the People's Charter (the origin of the name Chartist), which focused on the demand for universal suffrage, and petitioned Parliament. The movement developed through signatures and mass rallies, but conflict arose over the movement's policies between moderate moralists and a violent faction led by O'Connor, and after the Great Petition Movement of 1848, the movement declined due to government repression and internal divisions.

19世紀英国で展開された労働者階級を主体とした政治運動。1832年の選挙法改正に不満な労働者および一部商工業者が，オーエン，ラベット，アトウッドらを中心に結束。1837年普通選挙権の要求を中心とする〈人民憲章People's Charter〉（Chartistの名の由来）を作成し議会に請願を行った。署名，大衆集会により運動を展開，運動方針をめぐって穏健な道義派とオコンナーを指導者とする暴力派の対立が生じ1848年の大請願運動後は政府の弾圧と内部分裂で衰退。
