Oshima cherry - Oshima cherry

Japanese: オオシマザクラ - おおしまざくら
Oshima cherry - Oshima cherry

A deciduous tall tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 8-15 meters. The leaves are obovate-elliptical, 8-13 cm long, hairless, with a pointed tail and serrated edges that end in an awn shape. In March and April, white five-petaled flowers measuring 3.5-4 cm in diameter bloom in a panicle along with the green young leaves. It is found in the Izu Islands, Izu Peninsula, and Boso Peninsula. It is somewhat resistant to salt damage and air pollution. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that it is common on Izu Oshima, and it is also known as Takigizakura because it is planted for firewood and charcoal. It is planted in gardens and used as a rootstock for grafting cherry trees. The leaves are salted and used to wrap sakura mochi (cherry blossom rice cakes).
