Kiel Canal - Kiel Canal

Kiel Canal - Kiel Canal
An artificial waterway that crosses Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany and connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. It is 98.7 km long, 103 m wide, and 11.3 m deep. It was built between 1887 and 1895, and expanded between 1907 and 1914. It was a German domestic waterway that was opened primarily for strategic purposes, but Germany unilaterally opened it to foreign ships as a trade route connecting the two high seas. After World War I, it was internationalized by the Treaty of Versailles, and was opened equally to merchant and military ships of all countries at peace with Germany. On November 14, 1936, Germany unilaterally abrogated the provisions of the treaty. After World War II, the Allied Powers that occupied Germany did not express an official position on Germany's abrogation, and it is unclear whether the canal still has the status of an official international canal today. In reality, it is open to ships from all countries by Germany.
