A dactyl used in gagaku music in China and Korea. It is a wooden carving of a crouching tiger with 27 saw-like notches called sogo on its spine. A bamboo sasara called mokureki is used to strike the tiger's head three times and stroke its back three times to signal the end of the music. "敔" means to stop. It was made in China during the Zhou dynasty (c. 1200-256 BC) and was used together with an instrument called the shu, but after the Han dynasty, the shu came to be played at the beginning of a piece. It was brought to Korea from the Song dynasty during the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) and became an instrument in gagaku music at Confucius temples.
