Chatan [town] - Chatan
A town in Nakagami County, Okinawa Prefecture, in the central-western part of Okinawa Island. It faces the East China Sea, to the west of Okinawa City. It was the site where US forces landed during the Battle of Okinawa, and after the war it became a military site. Kadena Air Base is located between the town and Kadena Town to the north. The military base occupies more than 50% of the town area, and the town's economy is highly dependent on the base. Area: 13.93 km2 . Population: 27,264 (2010).
