A device that measures the degree of cloudiness of water, that is, turbidity. It is also called a turbidity meter or nephelometer. The unit of turbidity is defined as 1° when 1 mg of kaolin (white china clay) is suspended in 1 liter of distilled water (kaolin degree). Another more accurate unit is the formazin degree measured using a formazin standard solution (aqueous solutions of hydrazinium sulfate and hexamethylenetetramine at specified concentrations, mixed well, and left to stand for 24 hours at approximately 25°C). Measurements are generally performed by preparing several standard solutions with turbidities close to the turbidity of the sample liquid and comparing them with these.
