Trillium smallii (English spelling)

It is a perennial plant of the lily family that grows in mountainous areas. It produces cylindrical stems about 20 cm tall from a thick rhizome, with three large broad oval leaves in a whorl at the end. Around May to June, it produces a single flower with a stalk in the center of the whorl. The flower consists of three green or purplish-green outer tepals, six stamens, and one pistil, and has no inner tepals that correspond to petals. The fruit is a dark purple berry that is sweet and sour and can be eaten raw. Closely related species include Trillium kamtschaticum in Hokkaido and Trillium tschonoskii in the deep mountains, both of which have three inner tepals that are white or pale pink in addition to the outer tepals.
