Baumé degree - Baumé degree

Baumé degree - Baumé degree

A unit of specific gravity used to mark evenly spaced scales on floating balances. There are light Baume scales (symbolized as Bl or Bél) for light liquids and heavy Baume scales (symbolized as Bh or Béh) for heavy liquids. Light Baume scales are calculated by dividing a 10% solution of salt into 10 equal parts, 0 Baume degrees, and pure water into 10 Baume degrees, while heavy Baume scales are calculated by dividing a 15% solution of salt into 15 Baume degrees, and pure water into 0 Baume degrees, and so on. The relationship between scales and specific gravity varies slightly from country to country, but in Japan, the Measurement Unit Regulations of the Weights and Measures Act stipulate the following: "Light Baume scales are expressed by subtracting 1 from the reciprocal of the specific gravity, multiplying this by 144.3, and then adding 10 to the result." "Heavy Baume scales are expressed by subtracting 1 from the reciprocal of the specific gravity, and then multiplying this by 144.3." The scale is named after the French chemist Baume, who created it in 1784.
