435 to 440-491 Emperor of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Reigned 474-475, 476-491. Also said to have been born in 426. Formerly named Tarasikodissa. Chieftain of the Isaurian tribe, he was invited to the court by Leo I to oppose the Germanic forces represented by Aspar. He married the princess Ariadne and took the name Zeno (466). After the death of Leo I (474), his seven-year-old son ascended to the throne as Leo II, but he died the same year and became the legitimate emperor. In 475, he was usurped by the former emperor's brother-in-law Basiliscus, but was restored the following year, and became the sole emperor of the Roman Empire after the death of the legitimate emperor of the West, Romulus Augustulus, in the same year.
