Germanic Tribal Law (Germanic Tribal Law) (English: Volksrechte)

The law of Germanic tribes in the early Middle Ages. This refers specifically to the tribal codes that were established between the late 5th century and the early 9th century. They were recorded in Vulgar Latin, and contain many provisions on atonement (buse) and procedural law. There are few provisions on private law, and only a few on national and administrative law. They were personal law that applied only to the tribesmen in question. Tribal codes are broadly divided into three groups, differing in the time and conditions of their establishment. The first group is the legal records of the Germanic peoples who settled within the Roman Empire.
