Michizō Tachihara

Japanese:
Michizō Tachihara

Poet. Born in Tokyo on July 30, 1914. After graduating from the former First Higher School, he graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University in 1937 (Showa 12). He first published free-style tanka in the magazine Shika, which was presided over by Maeda Yugure, but was inspired by Miyoshi Tatsuji's quatrains and turned to poetry. He then studied under Hori Tatsuo and Muro Saisei, and while absorbing the poetic styles of Tsumura Nobuo, Maruyama Kaoru, Rilke, and the Shin Kokin Wakashu, he created his own unique sonnet-style poems, musically composed from delicate poetic words. In 1934, he stayed in Oiwake, Shinshu for the first time, and fell in love with the scenery there, which would later become the backdrop for many of his poems. He became a member of the "Shiki" group of Tatsuo Hori and others, and published works in "Cogito" and other publications, but died at the age of 24 on March 29, 1939, from tuberculous pleurisy. Kaoru Maruyama mourned him, saying, "His voice was full of pure esprit, lyricism, elegance, and newness; it felt like God had blown on the green of this bamboo for a moment and left the lingering sound in his ears forever." His poetry collections include "Forget-me-nots" and "Poems of Dawn and Evening" (1937), and after his death, Tatsuo Hori published "Gentle Songs" (1947). His complete works have been published four times. He was awarded the 1st Nakahara Chuya Prize.
