Lopez de Mendoza, I.

...Don Juan Manuel, the nephew of the wise king, wrote Count Lucanor, a work that, along with Boccaccio's Decameron, provided much of the material for later European literature. [The 15th Century - Towards the Renaissance]
In the second half of the 15th century, the influence of the Italian Renaissance began to be seen, and delicate lyric poems were written by the court poet Marquis de Santillana, also known as Iñigo López de Mendoza (1398-1458), and Jorge Manrique, among whom the latter's Ode to the Death of the Father is considered a masterpiece of elegy in world literature, on a par with Milton's Lycidas and Tennyson's In Memoriam. It was also during this period that the uniquely Spanish style of poetry, the "romance", was born, with lines of eight syllables, and only the even-numbered lines rhyming.
