Neutral detergent

Sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate A detergent whose aqueous solution is neutral, like ABS. Ordinary soap (sodium fatty acid) is an alkaline detergent and is not suitable for washing woolen fabrics, but neutral detergents are particularly excellent in such cases. It is widely used to wash dishes, vegetables, and fruit, but is harmful if accumulated in the body. It has also been found that AS, a sulfate ester of higher alcohol, is better than ABS for purifying sewage. Incidentally, ABS is not easily decomposed in nature, and has even affected the water supply, so it is no longer used. (→Cleaning agents)

アルキルベンゼンスルホン酸ナトリウム ABSのように，水溶液が中性であるような洗剤。普通の石鹸 (脂肪酸ナトリウム) はアルカリ性洗剤で，毛織物などの洗濯に適さないが，中性洗剤はこのような場合特にすぐれている。広く食器，野菜，果物の洗浄に使われているが，体内に蓄積されると有害である。また，下水浄化のためには高級アルコールの硫酸エステル ASのほうが，ABSよりもすぐれていることがわかっている。なお，ABSは自然界で分解しにくく，上水道にまで影響が出たため，使用されなくなった。 (→洗浄剤 )
