Ishida Tamigai (lipped periwinkle)
A small snail shell of the family Celastridae (illustration) with a cobblestone-like shell surface. The shell is 2.5 cm high and 2.2 cm wide. The shell is oval and robust, with seven stories and a low cone shape. The shell surface is wrapped with rectangular granules, hence the name. The shell is green-black with yellow, brown, and red spots and bands. The shell opening is rounded, slanting forward with a white edge. The inside of the shell opening has a pearlescent luster. The lid is rounded, translucent, and yellow. It is usually found in the intertidal zone of rocky coasts south of southern Hokkaido, and spawns in the summer. It is one of the sea creatures and is edible.

殻表が石畳状の小型のニシキウズガイ科の巻貝(イラスト)。殻の高さ2.5cm,太さ2.2cm。殻は卵円形で堅固,巻きは7階で低円錐形。殻表は長方形の顆粒(かりゆう)が巻き,その外観からこの名がある。殻は緑黒色の地に黄色,褐色,紅色の斑や帯を飾る。殻口はまるみがあり,前方に傾き縁は白色。殻口内は真珠光沢がある。ふたはまるく,半透明で黄色。北海道南部以南の岩れきの海岸の潮間帯にふつうで夏に産卵する。磯物の一つで食用にする。
