Double fertilization

A form of fertilization unique to angiosperms. In the embryo sac of angiosperms, one of the male nuclei that emerges from the pollen tube that has reached the embryo sac combines with an egg cell, while at the same time the other male nucleus combines with the polar nucleus of the embryo sac. This simultaneous combination of the polar nuclei of the embryo sac rather than simply fertilizing the egg is called double fertilization by E. Strassbrüger (1900), and defined the combination of the egg nucleus and male nucleus as genital fertilization, and the combination of the polar nucleus and male nucleus as vegetative fertilization. In many plants, it is the basis for the formation of the endosperm, which provides nutrients during germination.

被子植物に特有な受精の形式。被子植物の胚嚢において，胚嚢に達した花粉管から流出した雄核の1つは卵細胞と合体するが，このとき並行して，他の雄核は胚嚢の極核と合体をする。このように単に卵が受精するばかりでなく胚嚢極核が同時に合体することを E.シュトラスブルーガーが重複受精と呼び (1900) ，卵核と雄核の合体を生殖受精，極核と雄核の合体を栄養受精とした。多くの植物の場合，発芽の際の栄養分である胚乳形成の基礎になっている。
