Earth-human correlation theory

Japanese: 地人相関論 - ちじんそうかんろん

The view that there is a mutually interacting relationship between humans and nature, as represented by land, and that the study of geography deals with the topic of local land-human phenomena. The explanation based on a simple determinism of the natural environment, which places nature at the center, and which holds that nature, especially climate, influences ethnicity and life, has been inherited from ancient Greece to the Enlightenment thinkers of the early modern period. Even F. Ratzel, who criticized such theories and built the foundations of scientific environmental theory, placed more emphasis on the proposition that nature has an impact on humans.

土地によって代表される自然と人間との間には，相互に作用し合う関係があり，地理学の研究は地域に即した地人相関現象を主題として扱うという見解。自然，とくに気候が民族性や生活に影響を及ぼすといった自然を主格とする素朴な自然環境決定論による説明は，古代ギリシアから近世の啓蒙思想家たちに至るまで継承されてきた。そうした所説を批判し科学的環境論の基礎をつくったF.ラッツェルにおいても，どちらかといえば自然が人間に及ぼす影響という命題に重点がおかれていた。
