1902‐74 A Finnish Uralic linguist. Born in Laukaa in south-central Finland, he aimed to study philosophy at the University of Turku but switched to linguistics midway and transferred to the University of Helsinki. In 1929 he had the opportunity to carry out fieldwork on the Mordovian language, and thereafter devoted himself to the study of Lappish. From 1934 to 1949 he was professor of Finnish and related languages at the University of Turku. In 1949 he became professor of Finno-Ugric languages at the University of Helsinki, and successively held important positions there, including rector (1953-68) and president of the Finnish Academy of Sciences (1967-68).
