Oort constant - Oort number

A constant used to derive the rotation speed of the Milky Way from observations of the radial velocity and proper motion of stars near the Solar System. It was introduced by J.H. Oort of the Netherlands in 1927. The radial velocity V(/r) and proper motion μ(/l) of a star near the Sun are expressed as V(/r) = Arsin2l and μ(/l) = B + Acos2l, where r and l are the distance from the Sun and the galactic longitude, respectively, where A and B are called the Oort constants. A-B gives the angular velocity of the Galactic rotation of the Sun, and multiplying this by the distance from the Sun to the center of the Galaxy gives the Galactic rotation speed in the Solar neighborhood.
