A three-dimensional coordinate measuring instrument has x , y , and z measurement axes arranged at right angles to each other, detects the measurement point with a probe attached to the bottom end of the z axis, and uses a scale on the measurement axis to read the three-dimensional orthogonal coordinate value of the measurement point to determine the dimensions and shape of the item. Some instruments use a cylindrical coordinate system such as a rotating table or a rotating center support base, or a polar coordinate system with an articulated mechanism. The scale usually uses a digital encoder system, and the coordinates are displayed digitally.
