Policy reserve; premium reserve

This is a statutory reserve fund unique to insurance companies that is set aside a certain percentage of insurance premium income in order for insurance companies to fulfill their responsibility to pay insurance claims. In the case of non-life insurance, it consists of an unearned premium reserve to prepare for future insurance accidents, and an extraordinary risk reserve to prepare for insurance accidents such as disasters caused by normally unforeseen large fires or typhoons. In the case of life insurance, it consists of insurance premium reserves and unearned premiums, and depending on the type of insurance, a contingency reserve may also be added. Insurance companies must pay insurance claims smoothly in the event of an insurance accident, so they are required to set aside various reserves under Article 88 of the Insurance Business Act in order to ensure the soundness of their operations.

保険会社が保険金の支払責任を果すために収入保険料の一定割合を積立てておくもので，保険会社特有の法定義務積立金の一つである。損害保険の場合は将来発生する保険事故にそなえるための未経過保険料準備金と，通常予測されない大火や台風による災害などの際の保険事故にそなえる異常危険準備金とから成る。生命保険の場合は保険料積立金と未経過保険料から成り，さらに保険種目によっては危険準備金を加えて積立てられる。保険会社は保険事故の発生に対して円滑に保険金を支払わなければならないため，その運営の健全をはかるため保険業法 88条により諸種の積立金を強制されている。
