...Rhizines are the hyphae of the hypodermis on the underside of the lichen, which serve to fix the lichen to the substrate, but do not develop vascular tissue. Umbilicus are hard, umbilicus-like bundles of hyphae that have the same origin as rhizoids and are unique to the family Cercospora. Cyphellae and pseudocyphellae are tiny holes or cracks that appear on the surface of the lichen, which can be circular or linear, and are thought to play a role in gas exchange.
