A general term for equipment that temporarily stores energy in the form of thermal energy. Because the conversion efficiency is low when converting thermal energy back into the original energy, it is usually used to store surplus thermal energy. It is used when there is a seasonal or time-of-day difference between the time thermal energy is generated and consumed, when leveling out the operation of thermal energy equipment that involves additional fluctuations, and when utilizing waste heat, such as in regenerators for thermal storage heat exchangers and refrigerators. Thermal storage methods vary depending on the heat storage material (solid, liquid, gas) and the heat used (sensible heat, latent heat), but the most efficient thermal storage methods are those that use the latent heat of evaporation of water or the latent heat of melting of molten salt or ice.
