1530?-1604 French grammarian and linguist, and royal petitions auditor. Born in Nîmes in the south of France, he traveled to Paris to serve at the royal court (1553-54). In recognition of his learning and ability, he was appointed ambassador to Portugal in the summer of 1559, and traveled to Lisbon, where he worked to ease tensions between the two countries over the issue of Brazilian colonization. After resigning in the fall of 1561 and returning to France, he devoted himself to his studies, and associated with Ronsard and other writers. His greatest achievement was compiling what was essentially the first French dictionary in history, the Dictionary of Modern and Ancient French (1606).
