Jean Nicot

1530?-1604
French grammarian and linguist, and royal petitions auditor. Born in Nîmes in the south of France, he traveled to Paris to serve at the royal court (1553-54). In recognition of his learning and ability, he was appointed ambassador to Portugal in the summer of 1559, and traveled to Lisbon, where he worked to ease tensions between the two countries over the issue of Brazilian colonization. After resigning in the fall of 1561 and returning to France, he devoted himself to his studies, and associated with Ronsard and other writers. His greatest achievement was compiling what was essentially the first French dictionary in history, the Dictionary of Modern and Ancient French (1606).

フランスの文法･言語学者，王室請願聴聞官。南フランスのニームに生まれ，パリに上京して宮廷に出仕(1553‐54)。学識と手腕を買われて1559年夏，ポルトガル駐在大使に任じられリスボンに赴き，ブラジル植民問題で緊張を増した両国関係の打開に努力。61年秋辞任帰国後は学問に没頭し，ロンサールその他の文人と交わる。最大の功績は実質的に史上最初のフランス語辞典《古近フランス語宝典》(1606)を編纂したことであろう。
