Gerard Terborch (Ter Borch)

Dutch painter. Born in Zwolle. He is said to have first studied under his father (1584-1662), who was also a painter of the same name. From 1633 to 1635, he became a student of the landscape painter Pieter de Molijn (1595-1661) in Haarlem. After traveling to Italy, Spain, Flanders, and France, he worked as a portrait painter in Amsterdam. He stayed in Münster from 1646 to 1648, and painted the scene of the Westphalia Conference in "The Signing of the Treaty of Peace between Spain and Holland at Münster in 1648" (National Gallery, London). He married and obtained citizenship in Deventer in 1654, and died there on December 8. After 1660, he painted many small-format portraits. Many of his paintings are genre paintings with an interior motif, and are characterized by delicate psychological depictions of the people and the use of light to emphasize the texture of materials (especially silk and satin). His representative works include "A Father's Admonition" (reprinted in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and the Berlin Gallery) and "A Woman Writing a Letter" (Mauritshuis Museum, The Hague).

オランダの画家。ズウォレ生まれ。初め画家であった同名の父（1584―1662）に学んだといわれ、1633～1635年ハーレムで風景画家モーレインPieter de Molijn（1595―1661）の弟子となる。イタリア、スペイン、フランドル、フランスを旅行後、アムステルダムで肖像画家として活躍。1646～1648年ミュンスターに滞在し、ウェストファリア条約会議の模様を『1648年ミュンスターでのスペインとオランダ間の平和条約の締結』（ロンドン、ナショナル・ギャラリー）に描いた。1654年デーフェンテルで結婚し市民権を得、12月8日同地に没。1660年以後は小形式の肖像画が多い。彼の絵は室内をモチーフにした風俗画が多く、人物の繊細な心理描写と材質感（とくに絹や繻子(しゅす)）を強調する光の処理に特色がある。代表作に『父親の訓戒』（アムステルダム国立美術館、ベルリン絵画館に重作）、『手紙を書く女』（ハーグ、マウリツホイス美術館）がある。
