A Franciscan monastery church in Florence, Italy. Its name means "Holy Cross." It was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and built between 1294 and 1385. It is a representative example of Italian Gothic architecture and is one of the largest Franciscan churches (115m long, 74m wide). It is a three-aisled basilica with a T-shaped plan, with a main hall at the eastern end and ten chapels on either side. Its basic structure and design are strongly influenced by Cistercian churches, avoiding curvaceous motifs and ornate decoration, and instead featuring a sense of spaciousness and tranquility created by slender corner columns and wide spaces between the columns. The wooden trusswork covering the nave and side aisles also reinforces this characteristic. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
