Pseudothemis zonata

Japanese: コシアキトンボ(英語表記)Pseudothemis zonata
Pseudothemis zonata
Order Odonata, Family Lithoda. A type of dragonfly commonly found throughout Japan except Hokkaido. Body length is about 37mm, forewing length about 40mm. The body is black, with yellowish-white stripes running down the center and rear of the sides of the thorax, and the 3rd and 4th abdominal segments are white in males, while in females they are yellowish-white with a black stripe. The base of the forewings is yellowish, and there is a large semicircular black spot at the base of the hindwings. The tips of both the front and rear wings are slightly smoky brown, and this tendency is stronger in females. The larvae live in shady ponds and stagnant rivers on flatlands and low mountains, and adults can be seen from May to October. They are distributed from Honshu to Ishigaki Island, as well as in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, central and southern China, and Tonkin. (→Dragonflies)
