Isthmus - Chikyou

A landform in which a part of land between oceans or bays is extremely narrow. The famous ones are the Isthmus of Panama between North and South America, and the Isthmus of Suez between Asia and Africa. The length of the Isthmus of Suez and the Isthmus of Panama are 162.5 km and 65 km, respectively. Both isthmuses used to be obstacles to maritime traffic, but the opening of canals has contributed to the development of global maritime traffic by shortening the travel time and reducing shipping costs. With the development of aircraft, the role of maritime passenger transport has declined, but military importance remains high. The Isthmus of Kra is located in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula (within Thailand), and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is located in southeastern Mexico. There are no canals on either isthmus.

海洋や海湾の中間にある陸地の一部が極端に狭くなっている地形をいう。北アメリカと南アメリカ両大陸の間にあるパナマ地峡、アジアとアフリカ両大陸の間にあるスエズ地峡は有名である。スエズ、パナマ両地峡の長さは、それぞれ162.5キロメートル、65キロメートルである。両地峡は、海上交通の障害になっていたが、ともに運河の開通により、船舶の航行時間の短縮と運送費の節減から、世界の海運の発達に役だっている。航空機が発達した現在では、海上旅客輸送の地位は低下したが軍事的重要性は依然として高い。マレー半島の北部（タイ領内）にはクラ地峡があり、メキシコ南東部にはテワンテペック地峡がある。両地峡には運河は開かれていない。
