A science that generally considers the mechanical properties of fluids that surround the Earth, such as the oceans and atmosphere. Traditionally, global fluid movements have been studied in separate fields. For example, ocean movements are studied in physical oceanography, atmospheric movements in meteorology, and movements inside the Earth, such as mantle convection and fluid movements in the outer core (which form the Earth's main magnetic field), each play an important part in Earth's interior physics. 海洋や大気など,地球をとりまく流体の力学的性質を一般的に考察する学問。従来,地球規模の流体運動は,それぞれ別の分野で研究されてきた。例えば海洋の運動は海洋物理学,大気の運動は気象学,マントル対流や外核(核)の流体運動(これにより地球の主磁場が形成される)など地球内部の運動は地球内部物理学のそれぞれ重要な部分を占めている。ところが,このような一見多種多様な地球流体運動にも,よく整理してみればきわめて基本的な共通点がいくつか見いだされる。
