At the time, the walled city of Intramuros, built on the left bank of the mouth of the Pasig River, was the center of the area, and it contained not only a fortress but also the government office, the archbishop's office, various Catholic churches, a cathedral, a city hall, a public school, a university, and a hospital, and only the Spanish lived there.
