Phenomenology of perception

This is the most important early work of French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Based on the results of Husserl's phenomenology and reinterpreting it in an original way, Merleau-Ponty attempts to overcome the traditional Western dualistic ideas (mind/body, subject/object, idealism/realism, etc.) while focusing mainly on the problem of the "body." After the two traditional ways of thinking about perception (intellectualism and empiricism) are rejected, the body as "being in the world" that appears in the "phenomenal field" is not simply a material, physical object, but a place of "ambiguity" where humans and the world, subject and object, play together. By emphasizing the ambiguity of the body, Merleau-Ponty's strategy is to overturn the dualistic understanding of the for-itself (mind) and the in-itself (body/object) that has existed since Descartes.

フランスの哲学者モーリス・メルロ・ポンティの初期の最重要著作。フッサール現象学の諸成果を踏まえ、またそれを独創的に解釈し直しつつ、主として「身体」の問題に定位しながら、西欧の伝統的な二元論的発想――精神／身体、主観／客観、観念論／実在論など――を克服しようとした。知覚についての伝統的な二つの考え方――主知主義と経験主義――が退けられたのちに「現象野」のうちに現れてくる「世界＝内＝存在」としての身体は、単なる物質的、物理的な客体なのではなく、まさしく人間と世界、主体と客体とが戯れ合う「両義性」の場である。身体の両義性を強調することによって、デカルト以来の対自（精神）と即自（身体・物体）との二元論的把握を転覆しようとの戦略である。
