The area stretching from the upper reaches of the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Missouri River basins is called the "heartland" and "granary" of America, and is also a thriving industrial region. In the early 19th century, everything west of the Appalachian Mountains was part of the "West," but as the cotton belt developed in the Southwest and the development of the Far West west of the Rocky Mountains progressed, the central-northern part, centered on grain growing, began to show its own unique identity as the "Midwest," a unified region geographically and politically and economically. The eastern and northern parts are forested areas, but are mainly prairies, and include parts of the Mississippian culture of the Indians that flourished before the arrival of white people.
