1292‐1383 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1347-54. Military politician and prime minister to Andronikos III. After Andronikos III's death, he came into conflict with Empress Anna's faction over the issue of regency for John V (age 9), and called himself the opposing emperor. After a six-year power struggle, he took control and ascended to the throne alongside John V (1347). However, seven years later he was forced to abdicate by the emperor and became a monk. He left behind theological treatises defending Hesychasmos (quietism) and a memoir-style History (covering the period from 1320 to 1357).
