Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 1347-54. Military politician and prime minister to Andronikos III. After Andronikos III's death, he came into conflict with Empress Anna's faction over the issue of regency for John V (age 9), and called himself the opposing emperor. After a six-year power struggle, he took control and ascended to the throne alongside John V (1347). However, seven years later he was forced to abdicate by the emperor and became a monk. He left behind theological treatises defending Hesychasmos (quietism) and a memoir-style History (covering the period from 1320 to 1357). [Wada Hiroshi]

ビザンティン帝国の皇帝。在位1347‐54年。軍人政治家でアンドロニコス3世の宰相。同帝の死後ヨハネス5世(9歳)の摂政問題で皇妃アンナ派と対立，反対皇帝を名のる。6年間の権力争いののち実権を握り，ヨハネス5世と並んで即位(1347)。しかし7年後には同帝により退位させられ，修道士となる。ヘシュカスモス(静寂主義)擁護の神学論や回想録風の《歴史》(1320‐57ころまでを扱う)を残した。【和田広】
