Chain store

Japanese: チェーン･ストア（英語表記）chain store

This type of retail format emerged in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and saw rapid growth in the 1920s. It is said to be one of the three major retail innovations, along with department stores and supermarkets. The term "rensa" (chain stores) is not often used today. There are two types of chain stores: regular chains or corporate chains, and voluntary chains (VCs). After World War II, a new type of chain store called a franchise chain or contract chain also developed.

19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけてアメリカで発生し，1920年代に著しい発展を遂げた小売形態で，百貨店，スーパーマーケットとならぶ三大小売業革新の一つといわれている。連鎖店という訳語は今日ではあまり使われない。レギュラー･チェーンregular chainないしコーポレート･チェーンcorporate chainとボランタリー･チェーンvoluntary chain(VC)とに分けられるが，第2次大戦後にはフランチャイズ･チェーンfranchise chainないし契約チェーンと呼ばれる新しいチェーン･ストアも発展している。
