This type of retail format emerged in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and saw rapid growth in the 1920s. It is said to be one of the three major retail innovations, along with department stores and supermarkets. The term "rensa" (chain stores) is not often used today. There are two types of chain stores: regular chains or corporate chains, and voluntary chains (VCs).
