Japanese: 芝居乗合話 - しばいのりあいばなし

A theatrical book. It is said to have been written by Nakamura Jusuke, the second generation of Kyogen playwright. It was probably completed around 1800 (Kansei 12). It consists of 5 volumes and 2 books. It is a kind of Kabuki guidebook that describes the history of Kabuki, theatrical events, customs, and actors' salaries. Volume 1 describes the origins of the plays and actors, as well as the genealogy of the three theaters, Nakamura, Ichimura, and Morita, while Volume 2 describes annual events. Volumes 3 and onwards are in a dialogue format and describe the management of theaters, topics of discussion among actors, the author's work, and so on. The title comes from the fact that it is composed of notes written by people the author met on board a public boat. The original no longer exists, but there are two copies.

演劇書。狂言作者の2世中村重助の著と伝える。1800年(寛政12)ころの成立か。5巻2冊。内容は，歌舞伎の歴史，芝居の行事や風俗，役者の給金などを記した一種の歌舞伎案内書。巻一は，芝居，役者の起源から中村，市村，森田3座の系図を述べ，巻二は，年中行事について記す。巻三以下は，問答体形式で，劇場の経営，役者の話題，作者の仕事などを記す。書名は，乗合船で逢った人の聞書きを綴ったという構成から来ている。原本は現存しないが，写本が2種ある。
