Kirishitanshuramento

...It is said that the origin of this practice dates back to 1614 (Keicho 19), when the head of the Christian ministry, Okubo Tadachika, tortured believers with straw bags in Kyoto, forcing them to renounce their faith by 'izakorobe' (The Tale of Christianity), and taking a 'Ukenin' (sign of acceptance). From 1635 (Kan'ei 12), a written document called the 'Nanban oath' or 'Kirishitanshuramento' was collected in Kyoto, Nagasaki, and other places. This document was in the form of converts swearing to renounce their faith to Deus or Santa Maria, and had a psychological effect of discouraging false converts....
