French author and ethnologist. He joined the Surrealist movement but left it in 1929 along with Queneau and others. After participating in a research trip to Central Africa (1931-1933), he began studying ethnology, publishing the travelogue "Phantom Africa" (1934). While working at the Musée de l'Homme, he formed the "Sociological Research Society" with Bataille and others, and published his autobiographical work "The Age of Maturity" (1939). After World War II, he continued to write the four-volume "Rules of the Game" for 30 years.
