An archipelago of volcanic and elevated coral islands in the western Pacific Ocean, the northernmost part of Micronesia. It includes islands such as Saipan, Tinian, Anatahan, and Guam, with Guam and Saipan being the main islands. Copra and tapioca are produced here. Magellan arrived in 1521, and the island was colonized by Spain, Germany, and Japan. After World War II, Guam became a U.S. territory, and the other islands became a U.S. trust territory. In 1986, the trust territory became the Northern Mariana Islands, a dominion of the United States. Total area 1,950 ^km2 . Population approximately 70,000 (2000).

西太平洋，ミクロネシア最北端の火山島および隆起サンゴ島からなる島列。サイパン，テニアン，アナタハン，グアムなどの島があり，中心はグアム島，サイパン島。コプラ，タピオカなどを産する。1521年マゼランが来航，スペイン領，ドイツ領，日本委任統治領を経て，第２次大戦後，グアム島は米領，その他の島は米信託統治領。信託統治領は1986年より合衆国自治領の北マリアナ諸島となった。総面積1950km²。約７万人（2000）。
