Cherkess
A general term for the three ethnic groups of Adygei, Circassians, and Kabarda who speak the Adygei-Circassian language group of the Caucasian languages. Also known as Adig. In English, Circassian, in Turkish, Çerkes, or Çerkez, in Arabic, Jarkas. The population in the former Soviet Union was 568,400 (1989: 125,000 Adygei, 52,400 Circassians, 391,000 Kabardians). Their ancestors lived on the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus since ancient times, and were called by various names.
