Kawai [village] - Kawai

Japanese: 河合[村] - かわい

A village in Yoshiki County in northern Gifu Prefecture. Population 1,450 (1995). The village is located on the west bank of the Miyagawa River upstream of the Jinzu River, on the border with Toyama Prefecture, with the Odori River flowing through the center and emptying into the Miyagawa River. Most of the village area is mountainous, part of the Hida Highlands, with settlements scattered in the valley bottoms of the Odori River and Inagoshi River, and the village center is near the confluence of the Miyagawa River and the Odori River. The Takayama Main Line runs along the Miyagawa River, and National Route 360 runs along the Odori River. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, but the scale is small, and the village also has a diversified business of rice farming, livestock farming, and fish farming. There is also a traditional industry of washi paper manufacturing.

岐阜県北部，吉城（よしき）郡の村。人口1450(1995)。神通川上流の宮川西岸に位置する富山県境の村で，中央を小鳥（おどり）川が流れて宮川に注ぐ。村域の大部分は飛驒高地に属する山地で，小鳥川や稲越川の谷底に集落が点在し，宮川と小鳥川の合流点付近が村の中心である。宮川沿いを高山本線，小鳥川沿いを国道360号線が通る。農林業を主とするが規模は零細で，米作，畜産，養魚の複合経営が行われる。和紙製造の伝統工業もある。
