This is a collection of essays by Matsuura Kiyoshi (pen name Seizan), lord of Hizen Hirado domain. The main and sequel volumes are 100 each, with three volumes totaling 78. At the suggestion of Hayashi Jussai, a central figure in the Edo Shogunate's educational administration and a friend of Seizan's, he began writing on the night of November 17th, 1821 (Bunsei 4), the year of his retirement, and continued writing for 20 years, but it was never completed. It is said that each volume was proofread by Jussai. Many of the essays are based on interviews with Jussai. The contents range from the Imperial Court and the Shogunate, to anecdotes about the Tokugawa Shoguns including Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu, daimyo, hatamoto, Shogunate officials including the Elders, scholars, writers, monks, doctors, entertainers, and other notable people, as well as strange tales, unusual stories, folk customs, and strange happenings from overseas countries. As he was skilled in both the arts and the military, and was also well-versed in the everyday life of the people, the articles are abundant and varied, and are not only extremely useful sources for learning about the social conditions from the Warring States period to the Tanuma era, but also excellent reading material.
