An acute, legally-recognized infectious disease of pigs. It is generally characterized by septicemia with characteristic diamond-shaped dermatitis, chronic nonsuppurative arthritis, and granulous endocarditis. The causative bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae has been reported in turkeys, humans, cattle, and horses. Infectivity varies depending on the virulence of the strain. In the acute form, the incubation period is 1-7 days, and symptoms include high fever, weakness, loss of appetite, and, in rare cases, vomiting.
