1433‐1508 A Russian monk and religious thinker. His real name was Nikolai Maikov. He was a leader of the Non-Holders (or "Hermits Beyond the Volga"). He first trained at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery in northern Russia, but then he left the monastery in search of tranquility "for the benefit of the soul" and built a hermitage on the banks of the Sora River, where he began his monastic life. He believed that the ideal was to avoid the noise of the "world" and live an ascetic life of meditation with a small group of monks. He strengthened this position during his travels to Greece, Palestine, and Sinai. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
