Nil Sorskii

A Russian monk and religious thinker. His real name was Nikolai Maikov. He was a leader of the Non-Holders (or "Hermits Beyond the Volga"). He first trained at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery in northern Russia, but then he left the monastery in search of tranquility "for the benefit of the soul" and built a hermitage on the banks of the Sora River, where he began his monastic life. He believed that the ideal was to avoid the noise of the "world" and live an ascetic life of meditation with a small group of monks. He strengthened this position during his travels to Greece, Palestine, and Sinai.

ロシアの修道僧，宗教思想家。俗名ニコライ･マイコフNikolai Maikov。非保有派(あるいは〈ボルガのかなたの隠者たち〉)の指導者。最初，ロシア北部のキリロ･ベロゼルスキー修道院で修行したが，やがて〈霊の利益のために〉，静寂を求めて，同修道院を去り，ソラ河畔に庵（いおり）をつくり，修道生活を始めた。〈この世〉の喧騒をさけ，少数の修道者らとともに禁欲的瞑想生活を送ることを理想とした。このような立場を彼はギリシアやパレスティナ，シナイ方面への旅において強化した。
