KClO 4 (138.55). When perchloric acid or sodium perchlorate is added to an aqueous solution of potassium salts, it is produced by double decomposition. It is a colorless orthorhombic crystal. It is stable at room temperature. At temperatures above 400 °C, it decomposes into oxygen and potassium chloride. Its density is 2.52 g cm -3 . Its solubility in 100 g of water is 0.75 g (0 °C) and 21.8 g (100 °C). It is slightly soluble in ethanol and methanol, and insoluble in ether. Since it is hardly soluble in water, potassium ions can be precipitated as potassium perchlorate, and the potassium can be quantified. As a strong oxidizing agent, it decomposes in the presence of organic matter or combustible materials, but is more stable than potassium chlorate. It is used as an oxidizing agent, rocket fuel, explosives, matches, raw material for fireworks (red-purple), analytical reagent, etc. It is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. KClO4(138.55).
