[died] June 14, 1936, Beconsfield, Buckingham. British critic and novelist. Along with H. Belloc, he was a representative of contemporary Catholicism. After studying painting at St. Paul's School, he studied at the Slade School of Art and literature at University College, London. He then entered journalism, and wrote a wide range of prolific writings, making full use of humorous paradoxes and aphorisms, and debated with GB Shaw and HG Wells. In the field of social criticism, he wrote What's Wrong with the World (1910) on the issue of land redistribution, and in the field of literary criticism, he wrote Robert Browning (03), Charles Dickens (06), and The Victorian Age in Literature (13). He also wrote Orthodoxy (09), a scathing attack on "progressive" thought, and converted to Catholicism in 1922. He wrote St. Francis of Assisi (23), The Everlasting Man (25), and St. Thomas Aquinas (33). He also wrote the novel The Napoleon of Notting Hill (04), a collection of short stories The Man Who Was Thursday (08), a series of detective stories featuring "Father Brown" (11-35), poems, and an autobiography (36).
